The El Dorado Dredge is a huge floating machine that once excavated and processed gold and tin from gravel. It dug ahead deep into the valley floor, with a revolving chain of buckets. The gold and tin was extracted on board and the processed gravel was discharged at the rear. The technology was developed in New Zealand, with the dredge being constructed in 1936 and ceased operating in 1954.
The dredge weighing in at 2500 tons is a significant engineering feature, manufactured in Castlemaine and Williamstown and assembled in El Dorado the floating monster rests at its final moorings on the out skirts of the town. The dredge is the last remaining structure of its type in Australia.
