Lavendyl

Lavendyl Is Kaikoura's iconic lavender farm and Dylans Country Cottages, two rustic self contained cottages set in the beautiful setting of the lavender gardens. Lavendyl sits on the foothills of the Seaward Kaikoura range at the foot of Mt Fyffe with easy access to bush walks, Mt Fyffe and is only 7Kms from Kaikoura township. The cottages are unique and each offers something special.

Both cottages have beds beautifully hand crafted by the original owner using Macrocarpa milled from trees grown on the site in the mezzanine bedroom. There is space in both cottages for an extra small bed or travel cot. in the bedroom. You are provided with everything you need to prepare a breakfast of eggs from our own chickens, home made bread, our own lavender honey, fruit and more which you can eat in the cottage or take out into the gardens to enjoy the scent of lavender and stunning scenery. The cottages have barbecues and basic cooking facilities to prepare other meals. Our own lavender toiletries are provided along with lavender water to fragrance the bath.

The Mahoe provides a romantic setting for that special night or two away. The private, fenced garden has an outside bath and shower - just imagine a cande-lit, hot soak, looking at the stars with a glass of something special in hand. For those in a hurry there is also a shower inside. The secluded balcony provides a peaceful setting to enjoy breakfast or a nightcap. The quaint staircase retains the shape of the logs used to create the individual steps. Exposed eaves in the bedroom and the low level exit to the balcony complete the fairytale experience of this delightful cottage.

The Kowhai cottage, which is slightly larger, additionally has a single bed in the bedroom and is ideal for families. There is a relaxing garden with views to Mt Fyffe. The bathroom has a spa bath and separate shower. Pets are permitted in this cottage by prior arrangement.

The gardens cover around 4 acres and are largely laid out with lavender and other plants used in making the products we sell in the onsite shop. They also feature native trees and plants including a statuesque Matai tree believed to be around 500 years old. There are many scenic photograph spots both towards Mt Fyffe and the Pacific Ocean not to mention the opportunity to capture a fine shot of bees feeding on the lavender. The gardens are a popular spot both for weddings and wedding photography and make a very romantic proposal setting. The beauty of te gardens is not restricted to the lavedner season as there is extensive spring bulb planting, dahlias and many other flowering bushes. There are a number of more unusual fruitiing trees spread through the gardens including crab apples, rowan, also known as mountan ash, sloe and hawthorn as well as lemons, apples and walnuts among others. Where possible we use the fruit from these to make products for the shop, combining them with lavender when it fits. Although they are meant to be in the orchard you may also encounter an errant chicken searching for grubs.

Durning the lavender harvest it may be possible to watch our lavender oil being produced. The lavender is harvested once the dew dries off it and is steam distilled. At other times of year we distill rosemary, thyme and anything else we are asked to process. The hydrosol produced as a by-product makes a very eco-friendly cleaning product.

The shop, furnished with stunning driftwood shelving, provides a relaxing shopping experience. It is filled with our own made lavender products, from face creams to sleep balm, jam to vinegar, which we send around the world. Lavender has been used for centuries for it's healing and relaxing properties. Our massage cream is particularly sought after for joint and muscle pain, particularly for arthritis. There are regular craft demonstrations and have-a go sessions which are publicised on our website, a great way to occupy the kids during the holidays. You can relax with a cuppa, perhaps trying our lavender tea, and enjoy some lavender scones or shortbread. Our lavender ice-cream is widely requested and, in addition to our regular flavours, we try to have a seasonal variety in the freezer. The range of lavender products on sale makes it an ideal place to shop for that special gift.
