Waihi Beach Lodge is an easy two-hour drive southeast of Auckland. Ali and Greg created this boutique bed and breakfast ‘beach getaway’, approximately half way along the beach. It is a perfect place to stay for anyone wishing to explore the eastern coastline of the North Island, or use it as a base to take day trips to the Coromandel, Rotorua, Hobbiton or Waitomo or just to relax on the beach. Guests often stop for their first few nights after arriving in Auckland or stop to catch their breath at the end of their trip around the country.
Close by we have the Martha goldmine in Waihi and the Karangahake gorge – both key attractions for all visitors. Also in the Karangahake gorge is the Hauraki Rail Trail where cyclists bike the various trails from Thames to Paeroa on to Waihi and also out to Te Aroha. There is bike hire available in Waihi
The lodge has three rooms with ensuites, king or queen-size beds, DVDs, televisions, and tea/coffee making facilities. The studio apartment is tastefully decorated in beach style. It has a king-size bed, a dining table, fridge freezer, cook top, television and DVD. There's also a small kitchenette, laundry and ensuite bathroom. All rooms have beach towels, bathrobes, hairdryers & toiletries, and private entrances plus free WIFI. Breakfast is served upstairs in the dining room or al fresco on one of the patios.
The lodge itself has a large lounge, day room and decks to watch the sea from and the beach is a very short stroll from the door (150m).
At Waihi Beach there are 4 very good local cafes, a pub, an RSA and Boating Club and a couple of great little takeaways to choose from for evening meal requirements
Waihi Beach is 9kms in length and does wonders in helping guests to get rid of their stress so they can relax. Either a walk before breakfast or after the days’ drive seems to really put guests in a relax mode.
Locally the is plenty to see and do - there are plenty of local walks of interest with beach and coastal walks in abundance. For those keen on fishing there is both fresh and salt water fishing options available within 40 minutes. Golf courses are close by with 4 within 30 minutes drive - all easily accessible.
There are also 3 wineries with cafes within 30 minutes drive for who want to sample local wine and food.
The working Martha gold mine in Waihi (15 minutes way )is a must see for all visitors - the open cast mine with its huge whole in the ground amazes all who see it. The Gold Discovery centre is also a major attraction with visitors being able to get up close with mining activities.
The Karangahake gorge always draws visitors - it reveals nature reclaiming the land from yesteryear when there was a gold mining town present and now just relics of days gone by. There is the Ohinemuri river running through the middle of the gorge and all round there is natural stunning scenery. There are walks anything from 30 minutes to many hours depending on the time you have available.
Close by also is the award winning Bistro at the Falls retreat - after a walk in the Karangahake gorge sitting down to a delicious wood fired pizza is just reward for your efforts.
