The Bay of Islands Vintage Railway in Kawakawa is the oldest in North Island, and the only working railway in NZ where the trains travel down the middle of a State Highway and right through the middle of the town. Trains pass the world famous Hundertwasser Toilets before travelling through the beautiful countryside to the longest curved wooden bridge in the Southern Hemisphere.

Our star attraction, Gabriel, built in 1927, a fine example of a working steam engine, is the only one in her type left in the world.

We schedule 4 trains every Friday to Sunday inclusive, and every day in school holidays. They depart from Kawakawa at 10.45am, 12 noon, 1.45pm and 2.30pm, and the return journey takes about 50 minutes.
