Built in the late 1800s and added to with much taste over the centuries, the impressive bluestone building once named "Rockmount" is now home to Dunedin's top-rated backpacker hostel featuring 17 comfortable guest rooms not only for the weary traveler, but also for visitors to the Otago University, cyclists of the Otago Rail Trail or even business people who prefer the sociable, relaxed environment of a backpacker hostel to a sterile hotel room. Over the past ten years, Hogwartz has hosted an international clientele of all ages and walks of life. Many of them returned more than once, finding the atmosphere at Hogwartz warm and inviting - a true home away from home. The majestic building is sheltered from the street by lovely, established trees and bushes attracting many native birds such as the NZ wood pigeon (Kereru), bellbirds, fantails, silver-eyes and even Tuis.

The probably most highly praised features of our up-market backpacker hostel, are the bathroom facilities. All of our many toilets and showers have undergone extensive renovations, and the latest European-style upgrades boast such luxuries as a rain shower, under-tile heating and automatic lighting. Last but not least - and really most importantly - you will find a restful, good night's sleep here. None of the impressively spacious bedrooms have more than six beds (no bunks!), offering our guests loads of personal space. All the mattresses are of hotel quality, and so are the cozy fresh sheets and duvets which are included in all the rooms.
