The Otago Central Rail Trail, NZ’s original great ride is rated as being among the ‘easiest’ of NZ’s Great Rides. It is New Zealands’s first Rail Trail and it follows the former route of the Otago Central Railway. The former railway line was ideal for New Zealand’s first off-road cycle-way and walking trail because it is all off road and has a wide gentle gradient making it ideal for groups, all ages and abilities. The trail is 152km long and stretches from/to Clyde and Middlemarch where cyclists traverse ever-changing dry and rocky landscapes, high-country sheep stations, spectacular river gorges, tunnels and viaducts.
New Zealand's Original Great Ride is open all year round. It's all off-road, no traffic, just Central Otago's big skies and distinctive landscape to enjoy.
