Located in Liège, the Royal Opera House of Wallonia is a lyrical center of the French Community of Belgium and is one of the three big Opera houses of Belgium. Since it was built, the institution stands at the Royal Theatre of Liège, the beautiful building lent by the City of Liège (opened the 4th of Novembre 1820).
Works from the 19th century repertoire (Verdi, Puccini, Massenet...) occupy a large place in our theatre's programme, but the Opéra also has a mission of discovery. Thus, the Liège-based opera house opens its doors to the less familiar repertoire of the 18th century, with composers such as Cherubini, Galuppi, Gluck and Grétry.
Over the years, the Opéra Royal de Wallonie has developed an excellent reputation and is positioned as a key player in the international scene. The Opéra Royal de Wallonie and its loyal supporters love to welcome to their stage international stars such as Ruggero Raimondi, Leo Nucci, Juan Diego Florez, Elina Garanca, Deborah Voigt, Jose Cura, José Van Dam... but they are also keen to discover local and/or budding artists. That's why every year, the Opéra Royal de Wallonie puts a point of honor to propose distributions harmoniously combining both.
