What do you get when you cross a 100 year-old recipe for traditional Hungarian pastry with a highly contemporary concept of dining and service? The answer is Első Pesti Rétesház Café & Restaurant, or in English: The First Strudel House of Pest.

The concept of a restaurant serving rétes (strudel), including entrées based on the flaky pastry is an anomaly in Budapest. Of course, you’ve undoubtedly had strudel before, but with duck leg, grilled venison or catfish? We doubt it. Once you enter the restaurant you face the baker preparing and baking strudels. You can basically watch, film and take pictures real-time while the strudel dough is being stretched, filled and baked.

The First Strudel House of Pest is located in the heart of Budapest in a historical building built in 1812. This unique restaurant’s mission is to preserve, hand down and popularise this real Hungarian tradition; the experience gained in preparing and consuming strudels in order to provide guests with gastronomic adventures that carry weight, history and values.

The restaurant also offers small programs for tourists, including dough-stretching/strudel making presentation as well as a short video (available in English, German, Italian, French and Russian) about Hungarian culture and traditions along with the history of strudel making.

The restaurant also provides the opportunity to purchase from a selection of souvenirs and traditional Hungarian items ranging from foie gras paté can through pocket knives to fruit jams from the countryside or even pálinka (a special local drink of 40-50 degrees of alcohol).

6. Creamed Veal ’Paprikás’ served with Buttered ’Galuska’
7. Roasted Lamb Chops served with Creamy Sugar Pea Mashed Potato & Onion Jam
8. Grilled Salmon Steak served with Balsamic Fresh Garden Salad
