The legendary Gerbeaud, on Vörösmarty Square in the heart of Budapest, prides itself on being one of Europe’s oldest, largest, most traditional, and most famous cafés and confectioneries. The café was established in 1858 by Henrik Kugler; its successive owner, Emil Gerbeaud, had made it world-famous by the turn of the century. Lovingly renovated in 1998, Gerbeaud was rejuvenated, but maintained its distinguished atmosphere for the lovers of fine cuisine. The Café shines with the cultured nostalgia of its original days: rich plaster work, magnificent chandeliers, marble tables, lavish fine wood paneling, and brocade wall coverings characterise the elegant, yet comfortable atmosphere of this home of tradition.
Gerbeaud’s specialities include well-known cakes, including Esterházy and Dobos cakes, as well as numerous sumptuous cream cakes such as the Orange-caramel, the Royal chocolate and the light Lemon-basil. Handmade bonbons, cognac cherries and cat tongues complement the eye-catching assortment. Packaged in wooden or paper boxes, these confections make the perfect gift, especially when combined with some sweet
tea cookies or handmade hazelnut cream. In summer, the rich range of cakes is supplemented with Gerbeaud’s homemade ice-cream and ice-cream desserts. All of our ice-creams are served in homemade almond cones, and are available from the Gerbeaud Pavilon on Vörösmarty Square.
Up to 330 guests can enjoy a classic café atmosphere in Gerbeaud’s various salons, whiling away the time reading newspapers, chatting, people-watching, or thinking. On warm days, there is room on the terrace for an additional 300 guests. Here, directly on the busy Vörösmarty Square, the motto is “to see and to be seen.” For groups of 10 or more, we offer café menus and snacks, which, with prior notification, can be prepared for you in one of our salons. By prior arrangement and according to availability, we can put individual salons exclusively at your disposal.
