Café Loki is located in front of the largest church in Reykjavik (Hallgrimskirkja). The main theme of the Café Loki is to offer traditional Icelandic food in a modern style. With increasing globalisation and chain restaurants it is need for small places that look back to the old days and homemade food.
For example there is served rye bread and flatbread based on an old recipe from our families, which have used it for more than hundred years. With the bread we have smoked lamb, herring, cheese and smoked trout. The trout is smoked by farmers near Lake Myvatn. The farmers catch the trout in the Lake with nets and smoke it by very old method.
The plates with introduction of many types of food are popular among the foreigners. The Icelandic plate I-III, as we call it, has slices of rye bread with mashed fish (Icelandic plokkfiskur) and smoked trout, flatbread with sheep-head jelly or smoked lamb. Also dried fish with butter and a bit of a strong tasted shark (fermented shark). The Icelandic “skyr” is also very popular. It is made from milk, but has a low fat content and is now well known in the healthy food sector.
The pastry is also based on old recipes. All Icelanders are familiar with bows, pancakes and love balls and connect this pastry with their grandmother. Also we have carrot cake, skyr cake, healthy cake and chocolate cake. www.loki.is

We have a splendid view of Hallgrimskirkja and also many photos of the church which the owners have taken. They have been collecting photos of variable weather and light for 16 years and always had the church in foreground. Part of this collection can be seen at Café Loki. In the same building there is also a textile sale from Hrönn design, the owner and she paint her collection on the top floor of Loki, at her workshop www.textil.is
