Museo Luigi Bailo

The museum is housed in what used to be a convent until 1866 – a convent with two cloisters originally built during the Renaissance period. The museum was closed to the public in 2003 in order to undergo significant restructuring and redevelopment work, opening its doors once again on 29th October 2015. One of the main distinguishing features of the work carried out is the building’s architecture, redefining the façade and the interior layout, particularly near to the entrance and the south cloister. The outside square was also redesigned, creating an “urban atrium”, where the design of the façade really stands out. Through a large, fixed window, this atrium visibly communicates with the south cloister’s interior museum whose cornerstone - both in the physical and symbolic sense of the word - is represented by Adamo ed Eva (‘Adam and Eve’), the famous sculpture by Arturo Martini bought with public funds back in 1993. This immediately gives the idea of an “open” museum, an inviting place to visit that is in touch with the rest of the town. The bright entrance hall runs deep into the heart of the building complex, setting the scene for the walkways around the rest of the museum. Another significant point of interest is the renewal of all exhibition areas and the new exhibition itinerary. The museum now offers an important anthology of the Municipal Modern Art Gallery, boasting around 340 pieces dating between the second half of the nineteenth century and the first half of the twentieth century. The backbone of the exhibition is represented by the collection of works by Arturo Martini (1889-1947), one of the most important Italian sculptors of the last century.
