Astrolabes, telescopes, microscopes, steam engines…. The Museum of the History of Physics of Padua University offers a scientific journey through time, from the Renaissance to the Industrial Revolution, and up to today.
Starting from the eighteenth-century Cabinet of Physics set up by Giovanni Poleni, the collection has been enriched throughout the last centuries. The instruments, which were intended for physics teaching and research, had actually to be continuously geared to the developments of science and the needs of teaching, and thousands of new apparatuses have thus been acquired, as well as some older instruments of the fifteenth and sixteenth century.
Characterized by objects of great value, often unique or very rare, the collection thus not only represents a precious evidence of the physics teaching and research in Padua from the eighteenth century onwards, but it also depicts the fascinating development of scientific thought and technology. The instruments themselves provide stories about scientists, about their ideas and experiments, and about the connections that linked the University of Padua to the Italian and international scientific community.
The museum itinerary is illustrated by original objects, multimedia simulations and by some interactive experiments. Please note that to visit the Museum, you have to book a guided visit (all details are available on the Museum's website).
