The Teatro Carlo Felice is in the very centre of Genoa and represents the beating cultural hearth of the town.
The old Teatro Carlo Felice was inaugurated on April 7th 1828 with the opera "Bianca e Fernando" by Vincenzo Bellini.
The original project was made by Architect Carlo Barabino.
Unfortunately, during world war 2nd an incendiary bomb destroyed the Theatre. On April 7th 1987, the foundation stone of the new theatre was laid. The new theatre, designed by Aldo Rossi, Angelo Sibilla and Ignazio Gardella takes on board the concept of a covered square, with a surface area of 400 square meters in which the theatre provides a perfect link between Galleria Mazzini and Piazza De Ferrari.
Traces of the original theatre are evident in the original columns, pronao, a Latin inscription and the terrace overlooking Via XXV Aprile, which can be reached from one of the foyers; the modern-day building has a very compact, geometric shape, over which looks the fly tower, soaring up to a height of about 63 meters in order to house all the stage machinery and set designs. The exterior is built in stone, plaster and iron, while the interiors are adorned with marble and wood. The main theatre, seating 2000, hosts a great orchestra and highly advanced technical sector. It has four stages: the main stage, a dorsal stage to the rear of the first, two lower stages set side by side. The main stage has a surface of 574 square meters.
The building is also equipped with a second theatre that seats about 200 and hosts conventions, conferences and musical events.
