Trattoria Arlati was founded in the ‘30s when Luigi “Luisin” and Modesta Arlati decided to make a qualitative leap and to leave their job in Pirelli to run a new business.There they started this endeavor, Luigi in restaurant room and Modesta in the kitchen.
In this place they spent wartime assisting, whichever way they could, clients and friends and striving everyday to put something on the table.
Fortunately they managed to receive from nearby Brianza good Salame samples, fresh eggs, and cheese or sometimes a piece of meat coming in suitcase of fellow countrymen employed at Pirelli that made up their wages without recurring to ration book and black market.
In 1947 was born Mario Arlati, the third Luigi and Modesta’s son.
The years go by; every day the trams and little trains coming from Brianza transporting in Bicocca thousands of workers that at 6 am warmed up with cups of “grigioverde” (grappa and mint in mineral water) and “bianchin sprusà” (white wine with seltz-campari).
At 5 am Modesta was already in the kitchen to prepare “Brodo” (meat-bouillon, basic component of many Milanese dishes), nervetti (cow cartilages), risottos, stracotto (stewed beef in red wine), ossobuco e polenta (sliced veal shank with polenta), minestrone soup, worldwide famous cotoletta alla milanese, cassuoela and Vitel Tonnè (sliced veal filet in mayonnaise-tuna-capers sauce).
Meanwhile, inasmuch the two elder children studied, graduated and followed their own path, Mario, instead, with his artistic attitude, remained and wanted to create the Trattoria his first artwork.
In the late ‘60s, Mario took over his parents and “made it happen” transforming the suburban Osteria into a trendy, cozy and classy fine restaurant, hooked up with all worldwide artists and celebrities that were attracted to a setting full of novelty: décor (antique and bric and brac furniture), relaxed and friendly atmosphere, traditional Cuisine always paying great attention to details and a continuous research of the natural ingredient and recipes to be rediscovered.
In’73 opened “Il Sotto” (The Downstairs), and then Trattoria Arlati became one of the first places in Milan where live music was played and every night performed famous groups like Formula 3, Area, Lucio Battisti and many others singers that organized explosive jam sessions that, at the end of the night, perfectly matched with a good plate of Salame, Michetta (typical bread) and flakes of parmesan cheese.
As the years go by, the city has changed as well: the neighborhood Bicocca becomes a new business district and university campus in Milan and Trattoria Arlati developed itself in the same direction: nowadays managers and university teachers seat at the Trattoria’s table next to artists, singers and actors.
After Mario’s management, succeeded his son Leopoldo who continued his father work with freshness and enthusiasm.
So the study and research in the milanese cuisine that in Mario could be temptation of gluttony and devotion, in Leopoldo are mandatory prerequisites to provide always an appropriate service and pursue of excellence, keeping on the traditions and the taste of natural ingredients.
The Leopoldo accurate and exclusive competence resulted in a refined selection of suppliers that guarantee daily a great quality of the food stuff starting from Salame and Coppa DOP, fresh meat from the farmers, seasonal vegetable in market, handmade fresh pasta, desserts and ice-creams.
The jewel in Trattoria Arlati crown is the wine cellar with around 10.000 bottles of the finest Italian wine, collected with knowledge over the years, just waiting to be tasted.
An ample wine list with 400 labels, through all the Italian regions and some fizzy champagne, is taken care by Wineoclock (www.wineoclock.it ), young and bright distribution’s company, in which Leopoldo is a founding member.
In 2006 Trattoria Arlati was awarded by city of Milan “Ambrogino d’oro” (award assigned by the Major to prestigious personalities for the city) as oldest license of Milan with the same family management.
In June 2014, the Chamber of Commerce of Milan has awarded the Trattoria Arlati with Gold Medal - Milano Productive, a prize given to all the companies with more than 40 years of activity.
In November 2015, the City of Milan has awarded the Trattoria Arlati with the title of "Historical Place", prize given to activities with more than 50 years in the same commodities sector, location, with the same original furniture and architecture.
For years the Trattoria Arlati philosophy has been the same throughout generations: the pleasure of being together with his clients and friends is a must, hosting them as if they were at home and sharing good milanese food, good music, art and the glamour of Milan, worldwide famous city for fashion, finance and lifestyle.
