VIRTUOSI DI VENEZIA

Story:
The Orchestra Virtuosi di Venezia-Orchestra da camera di San Marco had been formed in 2002 under the inspiration of Vivaldi’s work. The ensemble and the musical formation have both been chosen to recall the exact situation in which Vivaldi worked and reproposes in its concerts the athmosphere and the genio of the Red Priest’ compositions. The Orchestra was born with the intention and the honor of paying tribute to the great composer in the prestigious Ateneo di San Basso, in San Marco square, whose hall has the same dimensions of the Pietà Institue music hall, in which Vivaldi composed.

Antonio Vivaldi:
Antonio Vivaldi was born in Venice on 4th March 1678. Introduced to the study of violin by his father, a violin player at St. Mark's Chapel, he took holy orders, but, owing to his ill health, he celebrated Mass only for a short period and in 1704 he was "Maestro di Violino di Choro " in the La Pietà Institute, an all-girls orphanage. From 1705 he began to compose first a series of sonatas and then his first Opera: “Ottone in Villa” (1713). The following years were a series of productions and satisfactions up to 1725, “Il cimento dell'armonia e dell' invenzione” (Op. N.8), in which the opening concertos “Le Quattro Stagioni”. It had an extraordinary success. Then came the period for Vivaldi to manage the Teatro S. Angelo in Venice, during which he wrote operas and he never stopped traveling with the European royalty. In 1735 he met Carlo Goldoni for the firs time. Vivaldi died in Vienna on July 28th, 1741.

Venues:
Virtuosi di Venezia repropose the compositions of Vivaldi on the Ateneo of San Basso, a place, as well as prestigious, well known for having the same dimensions of the Pietà Institue music hall, which no longer exists in which Vivaldi composed at the Institute of Charity. The church of Ateneo of San Basso was built in 1076 in honor of San Basso and is one of the oldest churches in Venice. After the fires of 1105 and 1661 the church was built again. The simple elegance and classic admired today is probably attributable to Baldassarre Longhena, who worked at the time at the Basilica of San Marco. In the XIX century the church was robbed of its altar and its decorations and in the years to come was first sold to a private and later transformed into a laboratory for marbles and sculptures. In the fifties of the ‘900 the building was rebuilt and adapted to the conference room. The Ateneo of San Basso is now deconsecrated former church located in the heart of Venice, Piazzetta dei Leoncini, to the left of the Basilica of San Marco. Since its reopening in 2002 is considered one of the most important cultural centers of the city.
