ALGARVE REGIONAL MUSEUM
The Regional Ethnographic Museum was idealized by the painter from Faro, Carlos Filipe Porfírio (1895 – 1970). Inaugurated on the 15th of December 1962, it was created in collaboration with various artisans from the Algarve, who manufactured the works as requested.
This museum shows how people lived in the Algarve in mid twentieth century, before the Tourism industry emerged. The Hills and the Sea are portrayed through objects used in daily life.
The visitor can see working and domestic tools, furniture, “popular art” items (basketry, tapestry, etc), paintings by Carlos Porfírio, and photos by Helder de Azevedo.
In 1992 its name changed to Algarve Regional Museum and has been in continuous renovation.
