SAN DOMENICO GOLF
Against a backdrop of the cobalt blue sky and the sea, San Domenico Golf is situated a few meters from the Adriatic Coast and the ancient Roman City of Egnathia (V century b.C.), near the small fisherman village of Savelletri.
A Mediterranean links rated amongst the best in Italy, San Domenico Golf, is an 18 hole championship course.
Home to the PGA European Challenge Tour Grand Final, the course is spread over 6300 meters of lush land featuring undulating bermuda grass with sea views from every vantage point. The San Domenico Links Course is designed by European Golf Design who have created many famous courses such as Celtic Manor, Portmarnack in Ireland, and PGA Catalunya.
The course has a par of 72 and has been constructed to the highest standards, with greens conforming to USGA Specifications. As it is to be expected from a golf course so close to the sea, wind can play a significant role in the challenge of the course. Together with strategic bunkering, definitive fairway shaping and clever green design, a thought provoking test of golf has been set. This is complemented by incorporating local plants into the design of the course, which can be seen occupying great waste areas weaving their way in and around the golf holes, thereby ensuring that the golf course retains a local identity.
The most representative holes of the course are number 3, a long par 3 measuring more than 200 meters, beautiful and challenging, where an adverse wind often blows. Hole number 7, magnificent par 4 overlooking an ancient olive grove. The 16th hole, a par 5, is the longest, with its 560 meters, and it also the one closest to the sea.
Opened in 2003, San Domenico Golf Course hosted important national and international golf tournaments for professional golfers, such as the European Challenge Tour Grand Final. Many famous players have been here, including Martin Kaymer, Alvaro Quiros, Rafa Cabrera Bello and many others.
