Based in the medieval city of Kilkenny, the craft capital of Ireland, Kilkenny Design Centre is part of Kilkenny’s Castle Yard, built in the 1780s by the Butlers, Earls of Ormonde, as the coach houses and stables of historic Kilkenny Castle.
The Castle Yard is also home to the National Craft Gallery, one of Ireland’s most exciting artistic venues. Nearby is Butler House and Gardens, a unique guesthouse that was once the Butlers’ Dowager House.
The historically significant Kilkenny Design Workshops were also established in the Castle Yard in the 1960s. Staffed by bright, young international designers, craftspeople, design graduates and apprentices, the workshops’ remit was to improve design and manufacturing standards in Ireland, which they achieved though their creative output right up until closure in 1988.

The Kilkenny Design Centre was originally part of a large complex of buildings attached to the castle that housed a dairy, stables, coach houses and accommodation for grooms.Our historic dining room was built in the 1760s as grain stores for the Earl of Ormonde’s horses, making it one of Kilkenny's most unique venue's.
From the ovens being switched on at 5am each morning, the team here in Kilkenny Design Centre's daytime restaurant prove their passion for the food they produce each and every day. Our Head Baker, Joan's tasty treats are well known by the locals of Kilkenny and being situated across from the beautiful Kilkenny Castle her baked goods have even travelled as far as the USA after tourists visited to taste some of our local offerings. The restaurant offers more than just melt in your mouth desserts, our breakfast opens at 8.30am and our lunch begins at 12 noon with an array of fresh salads, wraps, ciabattas, quiches and hot meals such as Poached Salmon and Cottage Pie.
All of our menu's have been inspired by a wealth of local artisan producers such as Mileeven honey, Second Nature Oils, Taste the View, and Highbank Orchards.

The Foodhall at Kilkenny Design Centre showcases some of Ireland’s finest artisan products and gifts and is a popular local spot for coffees, teas or a light lunch. It offers a selection of our most popular restaurant dishes such as Fruity Chicken Curry and Duncannon Seafood Pie to take home and enjoy the delights of Kilkenny Design Centre from home. Each day the Foodhall offers guests a choice of delicious homemade food from Goats Cheese & Spinach Focaccia to the traditional Toasted Special, the choice is yours.
