Situated in the bucolic Cavan Hills in south central Ontario Canada 4th Line Theatre located on the idyllic Winslow Farm is summer outdoor theatre at its finest. 4th Line Theatre’s mission is to develop and promote original Canadian works of artistic excellence that explore regional themes, history and heritage and to present this work in a politically-responsible and culturally-sensitive manner. The company’s mandate is to preserve and promote Canadian cultural heritage through the development and preservation of regionally-based, environmentally-staged historical dramas. Through this process we seek to encourage innovation and experimentation resulting in productions that entertain and educate.

At the heart of 4th Line is the belief that art can illuminate and teach us about ourselves and our world. The process of creating the art is also important. It is not merely an anonymous product to be enjoyed but it is also vital, challenging and enriching for those creating the work and participating in its presentation. The work at 4th Line brings to light little known local and Canadian stories from our history, which remain relevant to this day. The past is not brought to life merely as a re-creation exercise but as a palpable way to enlighten and inform both the artists and the audience.

We involve professional artists and community members of all ages in our creative process through research, script development and performance. The delicate balance of artist and community is the key to the success of 4th Line. And one must not forget the physical context for our work: the outdoor landscapes of a century-old farm. The environment inspires a memory of home, space, and belonging and is often the most important character in any play. For 26 seasons, 4th Line Theatre has preserved and enriched the diverse cultural heritage of a rural historic village and its surrounding regions.
