The Canadian Canoe Museum

The Canadian Canoe Museum hosts the largest collection of canoes, kayaks and paddled watercraft in the world! Currently, the museum’s holdings number over 600 boats that together represent many of the major watercraft traditions of Canada. Through inclusive, memorable and engaging exhibits and programs The Canadian Canoe Museum shares the art, culture, heritage and spirit of paddled watercraft with our communities, and visitors worldwide.

The museum’s artifacts range from the great dugouts of the First Nations of the Pacific Northwest to the singular bark canoes of the Beothuk of Newfoundland; from the skin-on-frame kayaks of northern peoples from Baffin Island to the all-wood and canvas-covered craft manufactured by companies with names like Herald, Peterborough, Chestnut, Lakefield and Canadian. Over the years, boats from as far away as Paraguay and the Amazon have helped the Museum expand its reach and scope to include International examples.

Visitors will enjoy unique interactive, hands-on galleries that are fun for the whole family to explore. Kids activities such as a puppet theatre, scavenger hunt and model canoe building see young visitors fascinated. Artisans throughout the galleries demonstrate traditional skills such as paddle carving, felting and finger weaving. Also unique to the museum is a fully functioning wood shop where visitors can see traditional boat building techniques in action. A variety of paddled watercraft are built right on site every day!

The Museum also offers a multitude of programming year-round for all ages including award winning education programs for schools and youth groups, adult artisan workshops such as paddle carving, campfire cooking classes and snowshoe weaving, and on-the-water summer paddling camps for kids.

A new program in 2015, the museum is offering a unique Voyageur Canoe Tour experience where participants paddle a 36’voyageur canoe replica up and over the worlds highest hydraulic lift lock in Peterborough! This tour is offered seasonally with scheduled tours running Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays in July and August (see our website for exact times and dates)
