On our most popular Cooks Turnagain Tour, you travel on along the world famous Seward Highway where even we, as locals, experience something different each time. Maybe it's a moose, or the way the clouds form, or the pattterns and power of the water in the inlet, but it's always something. This road goes along the Turnagain Arm of the Cook Inlet which is bounded by the Chugach and Kenai Mountain ranges. This body of water is unique and there is much to share.

This tour also includes a one-hour spectacular cruise to get view the Portage Glacier. This is an opportunity to get closer than you would ever think to a glacier without actually being on it. The M.V. Ptarmigan was built as an ice-breaker specifically for the calm lake that was formed by this glacier. The tour is fully narrated by a National Park Service Ranger so you hear the authentic information about glaciers and the eco-system of the area. They always welcome questions. Along the roadside, you will stop to view the salmon when they are running.

After the lunch stop at a reasonably priced rustic lodge, you visit the Alaska Wildlife Conservation Center, Alaska's most visited attraction, This is a must see, especially if you did not experience the wildlife in the wild as you had hoped. Brown and black bears, moose, caribou, musk ox, elk, lynx, Sitka deer, eagles, wolves, and the rare wood bison, are all visible in a natural setting. This is not a zoo. It is a large drive-through/walk-through facility which takes in orphaned and injured animals and is one place where you are assured to see wildlife. We know many of the animals by name and their histories making your visit very enjoyable.

On the way back to Anchorage, enjoy a side trip to 2300 feet into the mountains of the Chugach State Park by driving through the Anchorage hillside neighborhoods for incredible panoramic views and to learn about life in Anchorage.
