Henry Flagler built the magnificent Gilded Age estate, Whitehall, in 1902 for his wife Mary Lily Kenan. It was described at the time of completion as "more wonderful than any place in Europe, grander and more magnificent than any other private dwelling in the world."
On June 5, 1959, Jean Flagler Matthews, Henry Flagler's granddaughter, founded the Flagler Museum. It opened to the public in February 1960, and was designated a National Historic Landmark in 2000.
The Flagler Museum has become a popular destination, providing unique educational experiences for more than three and a half million visitors from around the world, and hundreds of thousands of school children from throughout the state of Florida. The Flagler Museum houses thousands of objects and archives interpreting Flagler's personal and professional life, and the history of Whitehall. Year round the Museum offers tours, lectures, school programs, concerts, special events, and changing exhibits focusing on the history of Florida and America's Gilded Age. The Museum Store and Cafe des Beaux-Arts offer Gilded Age style gifts and a Gilded Age style lunch. Regular admission to the Museum is $18 for adults, $10 for youth ages 13-18, and $3 for children 6-12. Children under six are free. Special group rates are available.
