The Ringling is a preeminent center for the arts, history and learning that is dedicated to bringing past and contemporary culture to life through extraordinary visitor experiences. From its inception, The Ringling has joined the diverse visual traditions and theatrical spectacle of yesterday with the genre-defying global practitioners of today. A place of exploration, discovery and respite, The Ringling’s campus in Sarasota, Florida—which includes the Museum of Art, Circus Museum, the Ca’ d’Zan mansion, Historic Asolo Theater, education center and bayfront gardens—is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
The Museum of Art includes significant holdings of American, European and non-Western art. Noteworthy is the Peter Paul Rubens collection and Joseph’s Coat, a skyspace by James Turrell. The Ulla R. and Arthur F. Searing Wing features a variety of changing exhibits year-round. The Center for Asian Art in the Dr. Helga Wall-Alpelt Gallery of Asian Art, opened in February 2016, promotes the exploration of historical and contemporary Asian art through exhibitions, research and programs.
Established in 1948, the Circus Museum is the first in the country to document the rich history of the American circus. It features a side-show banner display, ornate circus wagons, and the Wisconsin, the luxurious private Pullman railcar used by John and Mable to travel the country. The 2012 addition, The Tibbals Learning Center, has several interactive exhibits as well as the largest circus model in the world, occupying 38,000 square feet.
John and Mable’s winter residence, Ca’ d’Zan, is a 36,000-square-foot, terra cotta mansion that resembles a Venetian Gothic palace. Completed in 1926 on the Sarasota Bay waterfront, it stands as a testament to the American Dream in the Roaring Twenties. One of the country’s most significant architectural treasures, Ca’ d’Zan was comprehensively restored from 1996 to 2002.
