Lake Park is proud to host the Dickinson County Freedom Rock at the Freedom Rock/Veterans Memorial. The Memorial contains 5 other rocks honoring those Veterans serving currently and in the past with a special tribute to the families of those Veterans.
The Dickinson County Freedom Rock is 7’ plus tall above ground and weighs 14 ¾ ton.
Ray “Bubba” Sorenson chose the images and saying on the south face of the Freedom Rock. The two gentlemen represent the Soldiers currently serving and the Veterans who have served honoring each other with a salute. The American Flag folded and lying across the Freedom Rock is a tradition the artist wishes to have the Stars and Stripes on each of his 99 Freedom Rocks with no two being the same. If you notice the flag is folded in preparation to be folded into the proper fold of the American Flag.
The north face of the Freedom Rock honors a surgical nurse, two Prisoners Of War (POW) from Dickinson County and two Dickinson County residents who were Killed In Action (KIA) during World War Two. The Honorees are Racheal Wunder (Top), Wilber “Bill” Ahart (Middle Left), Ed Gath (Middle Right), Milton Simpson (Bottom Left) and Lawrence Lambert (Bottom Right).
In addition to our Freedom Rock we have 5 other rocks for each branch of the military. Each service rock has symbols of that respective service honoring them. On the:
Army Rock has the logo of the Army, a Bradley tank and Army soldier.
Navy Rock has the logo of the Navy, and aircraft carrier cruising into danger and at the same time launching the F-35 Joint Strike Fighter.
Marine Rock has the logo of the Marine Corp. and the famous flag raising on Mount Suribachi on Iwo Jim island during World War Two.
Air Force Rock has the logo of the Air Force, AC-130 Gunship (Puff the Magic Dragon) and a Convair F-106 Delta Dart fighter/intercepter.
Coast Guard Rock has the logo of the Coast Guard, Eurocopter HH-65 Dolphin helicopter and a Response Boat-Medium (RB-M) for which are the primary workhorses of the Coast Guard in their protection of coastal water in the United States and around the world.
The benches sitting around the Memorial are all made of field stone and were purchased by families wishing to honor members of their family who served in the armed forces.
