The Children’s Discovery Museum is an educational organization where families and children learn through play. Designed for children ages birth - 11, we provide a space for children to learn by experimenting, by mimicking the behavior of adults around them, by manipulating their environment, by playing alongside other children, and by testing out their own creativity and their own ideas. We believe play is one of the most important parts of childhood and we have created a space that not only supports but also encourages deep, meaningful, educational play.
The museum is located in one continuous space that is divided into 11 different exhibits. We have exhibits like the Touch Tank, filled with local ocean animals that children can touch and hold, our Creation Corner is space filled with opportunities for art, and the child-sized grocery store that allows children to fill their carts with healthy foods. In addition to exhibits, we also offer daily programs, weekly after school classes and numerous special events. We’ve taught children about the science of sound in our Hands-On Science School Program, and helped children discover different mediums of art in Little Hands, Big Ideas. We’ve held GlowNights and welcomed local Maine authors into the museum. Every day is different and every day provides countless opportunities for hands-on learning through play.
The Children’s Discovery Museum has a mission to foster self-confidence and creativity, introduce children to new experiences and encourage the pursuit of discovery and wonder.
