The Knight family of Smiling Hill Farm has been farming in Maine since the 1600’s. Smiling Hill Farm is a working farm of black & white Holstein dairy cows producing pure, fresh, natural milk without chemical fertilizers, pesticides or artificial hormones. The 500 acre farm includes rolling hayfields and deep forests traversed with trails as old as the farm itself. The centuries old tasks of animal husbandry are performed daily with milking, haying, feeding and caring of the livestock on this historic farm. The Dairy Barn is open for viewing and tours are available by reservation. Smiling Hill Farm is dedicated to teaching each new generation the important role animals and agriculture have in our lives.




Over 150 animals can be seen, touched and enjoyed in the clean, safe, friendly Barnyard Petting Farm. The Barnyard specializes in traditional farm animals from around the world. Smiling Hill Farm exhibits and promotes many unique species of sheep, goats, cattle, fowl, pigs and other farm animals to insure the bio-diversity of our world. A maternity barn houses all the new arrivals and at the Hatching House you can witness the egg-to-chick transformation of geese, ducks, peafowl & chickens. Our Barnyard Gift Shop is stocked with numerous educational and farm related books, toys and games to help instruct children & adults in the care and appreciation of animals and the environment.




Located on site in the historic original dairy barn is a modern creamery which bottles milk for local customers. Smiling Hill Farm separates, pasteurizes, homogenizes and bottles milk in old fashioned glass bottles. A full selection of dairy products is produced including skim, 2% milk, creams, and flavored milks such as chocolate, coffee, strawberry, blueberry and other favorites. The Market has many unique Maine produced food products (maple syrup, jams, honey, popcorn & other goodies) and gifts available year round. Silvery Moon Creamery has been crafting several varieties of quality artisanal cheese since 2003. We make cheese in small batches at Smiling Hill Farm. We have received awards from the American Cheese Society (ACS). Our cheeses are used in several restaurants and are sold in many stores across New England. Our products include: unaged cheeses Queso Oaxaca, Rosemary’s Waltz, Queso de Verano, Casco Bay Dulse, Fresh Cheddar Curd (plain & herbed), Cream Cheese (seasonal); seasonal bloomy rind cheeses Brie, Camembert, Petit Coeur, Black Knight (with vegetable ash); aged raw milk cheeses Tomme (plain & washed rind), Moonchego; aged pasteurized milk cheeses Provolone and Smoked Provolone; Probiotic Yogurt (plain and flavored).



Smiling Hill Farm has over 25 km of trails encompassing some very challenging terrain. There are steep drops at “Holstein Hill”, gently rolling fields and old winding logging roads. There are plenty of trails to choose from regardless of your level of expertise. Trails are groomed wide to allow both classical tracked and a generous skate lane. A fully equipped rental shop has over one hundred modern ski packages available. Smiling Hill Farm has Rossignol cross country ski packages available and offer traditional Nordic touring skis as well as the compact skis for skate “freestyle” skiing. Lightweight snowshoes are also available for rental and allow exploration of areas of the farm not reached by trails.
