For an incredible destination that’s unparalleled, visit The National Shrine of Saint Elizabeth Ann Seton in Emmitsburg, Maryland. Conveniently located along a major interstate highway in Maryland (U.S. Route 15), we’re located 10 miles south of Gettysburg, Pennsylvania and about 70 miles north of Washington DC. We welcome visitors of all backgrounds. What makes our site so special is the story behind it.
At just 29 years old, Elizabeth Ann Seton was a bankrupt widow with five children to raise in 1804. At that time in the U.S., women could not own property or sign contracts. Despite these challenges, Elizabeth Ann thrived. She established the first congregation of Sisters founded in the U.S. She also founded the first free Catholic school for girls, which was staffed by Sisters. Sadly, Elizabeth Ann Seton died in 1821 at just 46 years old. Many years later, in 1975, Elizabeth Ann Seton became a saint, and she is the first American-born saint. Many find hope hearing Elizabeth Ann Seton’s inspirational story. When they discover the misfortunes she experienced, and how she thrived despite those misfortunes, they realize that they can do it, too.
You can begin your visit with a 12-minute film about Elizabeth Ann Seton’s life and self-guide the museum to gain some background and perspective on her life. You can also take advantage of a guided tour, which is offered every day of the week at 10:00 a.m., 11:00 a.m., 1:00 p.m., 2:00 p.m. and 2:00 p.m.
On the guided tour, you’ll discover where and how Elizabeth Ann Seton lived when she came to Emmitsburg. You’ll see the 1750s Stone House where she first lived, as well as the White House, built in 1810 after she realized that the Stone House wasn’t enough for all that she had in mind. Your group will also have a chance to take in the awe-inspiring Basilica, made of Italian marble and mosaics, where Saint Elizabeth Ann Seton’s remains are entombed. All three of these sites are within easy walking distance, and the entire property is accessible for those with special needs.
