Cogswells Grant

If you like antiques, then Cogswell’s Grant is a historic house museum that should be on your itinerary. This 18th century farmhouse overlooking the Essex River was the summer home of collectors Bertram and Nina Fletcher Little, and houses their celebrated collection of American folk art. The rooms are overflowing with paintings, redware pottery, painted furniture, shaker boxes, hooked rugs, weathervanes and decoys. Everything is displayed exactly as the family lived with it and shared it with their friends and fellow collectors.

Cogswell’s Grant has been operated as a coastal farm continuously for nearly four centuries, and offers beautiful views of the marsh and the Essex River. The grounds are open year-round, dawn till dusk, and walkers are welcome to explore the 165-acre working farm, historic barns, and landscape. Dogs are also welcome when accompanied by responsible owners.

Cogswell's Grant is owned and operated by Historic New England, and is open for tours June 1 through October 15, Wednesday through Sunday, 11 am - 4 pm. Special rates are available for groups of eight or more, call for reservations. Visit our website for more information about special programs on farm history, birding, plein air painting, and antiques.
