In 1971, the Michigan Historical Commission named the Fort Gratiot Light Station a Historical Site. Today the lighthouse is completely automated, with an approximate range of 16 miles and green light that flashes every 6 seconds for a half second. After more than 190 years since the first light was constructed at Fort Gratiot, a silent sentinel still beams out to guide mariners.
The site of the light station is a 5 acre campus on Lake Huron, where the lake and the St. Clair River meet. It hosts 7 structures, with the earliest being the tower in 1829, to an equipment garage built in the 1970’s. Enjoy a 45 minute guided tour of the buildings and lighthouse on this beautiful piece of property. Closed toe shoes are required to climb the tower.
You are cordially invited to plan the destination wedding of your dreams at the Fort Gratiot Light Station. The oldest lighthouse in Michigan, historic buildings, spacious grounds and beautiful vistas await you and your guests at this unique location for an unforgettable event. We can also accommodate your group of 20 - 300+ guests for any meeting, fundraiser or social gathering.
Overnight at the Light: In partnership with St. Clair County PARC, the Port Huron Museum proudly presents the “Overnight at the Light” program held at the historic Fort Gratiot Light Station in the 1874 Duplex building. This is a unique opportunity for up to 40 guests to spend the night, bunk-room style, in this notable building on a remarkable 5-acre campus. The program is perfect for scouting groups, family reunions and churches.
