Thomas Edison Depot

The Thomas Edison Depot Museum opened on February 11, 2001, as the second satellite facility of the Port Huron Museum. It is housed inside the historic Fort Gratiot Depot, built by the Grand Trunk Railway in 1858. It is the actual structure where Thomas Edison worked from 1859 to 1863 as a “news butcher,” pedaling newspapers and candy to passengers riding the train.

The museum’s exhibits portray Edison's multi-faceted story of creativity, family support, adversity, perseverance and ultimate triumph as the greatest inventor of our time. Many of the re-created period environments and hands-on interactive displays invite visitors to become participants in the inventor’s inspiring story by encouraging them to apply their own creativity and ingenuity as they learn about Edison's life and his inventions.

Enjoy a self guided tour as you go back in time and discover the recreation of young Edison’s mobile chemistry lab and printing shop inside our beautifully restored baggage train car.
