The Jack C. Davis Observatory at Western Nevada College in Carson City is a premier place in northern Nevada to get “up close and personal” with the moon, stars and planets. With both interior and exterior telescopes, and perched on the eastern edge of the Sierra Nevada mountains, the Davis Observatory is the place to be for astronomical happenings, planetary walks, and informative classes that keep students, scientists and the community on the edge of the latest technological advances.
The observatory is open to the public every Saturday night from 6:30 pm to 10:30 pm October through April, and 7:30 to 11:00 pm from May to September.If the skies are clear the staff will stay late to enjoy the viewing and gather data on a variety of astronomical objects. The 2nd and 4th Saturday of each month the observatory features public lectures on a variety of scientific topics.
Admission to the observatory is always free to everyone. To support the continued operation of the observatory donations are accepted in the facility's donation box during events and through the Western Nevada College Foundation. Private tours can be arranged by contacting Dr. Tom Herring, the director of the observatory.
