What is bike share?

Bike share is an innovative mode of transportation that allows users to make trips using publicly available bikes. It consists of a fleet of specially designed, sturdy and durable bikes that are locked into a network of docking stations throughout the service area. The bikes can be unlocked from one station and returned to any other station in the system, making bike share ideal for short, one-way trips.

How does Citi Bike work?

Citi Bike is designed to be a convenient way to get around the city, and is ideal for short rides and one-way trips. Buy a Day Pass, and you’ll get access to 8,000 bikes across Manhattan, Brooklyn, Queens or Jersey City. Pick up a bike at one of 500 stations whenever you need one, and drop it off at any other station when you’re done with your ride. Take as many rides as you want while your pass or membership is active.

When should I use bike share vs. bike rental?

Bike share is ideal for short, one-way rides (getting from Point A to Point B) since you can take a bike out from any station and return it to any other in the network. You can also use it to take a longer ride – your first 30 minutes are included with a Day Pass and each additional 15 minutes is only $4, which is comparable with traditional bike rental hourly prices. But with bike share, you can take as many 30-minute rides as you want while your pass is still active at no additional charge! If you’re looking to ride with children under 16, to rent a specific type of bike, or to take a guided tour, traditional bike rental with a trusted company would be your best bet.
