The Schoharie River Center, (SRC), is a registered 501 (c) 3 not for profit organization, located at 2025 Burtonville Road, Esperance New York, zip 12066. Our mission is to instill a love for learning, arts and science, promote the values of stewardship for our local environment, and encourage the positive and responsible involvement of all people in their communities.
The SRC operates an environmental education and cultural arts center located on approximately 20 acres including a riparian forest preserve along the Schoharie Creek in Montgomery County, New York. The property is open for short easy hiking / walking on a half mile loop trail that leads from the SRC Environmental Education Center / Science Lab parking lot to the shore of the Schoharie Creek. The trail is suitable for hiking, cross country skiing, snow shoeing, and mountain biking. The property is dog and horse friendly.
Additional hiking and skiing options are available close by to the SRC at the Charleston State Forest and the Wilsey Creek Perserve. Both easly accessible from the SRC.
The SRC provides experiential based environmental education and stream monitoring training to the public, as well as on-going monitoring of water quality of local streams, lakes and rivers within the Mohawk River Basin Watershed. The SRC's Environmental Study Team Program is a nationally recognized environmental education and youth development program, and meets regularly at the SRC, as well as in several other communities within the Mohawk and Schoharie watersheds. Our network of trained volunteers (high school youth and community volunteers) conduct Rapid Bio-assessments of local waters, and report out data and results to the public and New York State DEC. Youth who participate in the program get involved in on-going and year round environmental studies, learn how to document and present their research findings, and participate in a wide range of seasonal out-door activities such as Hiking, kayaking, sailing, swimming, biking, cross country skiing, snow shoeing, maple syrup making, etc.
The SRC also works with schools and community organizations to develop, tailor, and implement experientially based environmental education programs for a wide range of youth and community locations (after school programs, school field trips, community organizations and advocacy groups). During the months of July - August, the SRC provides week long summer Ecology and Community Archaeology Filed Schools programs for youth ages 12 - 17.
The SRC owns a historic 1857 Meeting Hall (former Methodist church) where we also hosts and produce musical concerts, lectures, movies and workshops which often focus on traditional arts and artists local to the Mohawk and Schoharie watershed and upstate New York.
Regular programming includes youth development and environmental education programming, community cultural documentation programming. Information regarding upcoming programming and workshops is available at our website and on our two Facebook pages: Schoharie River Center or Environmental Study Team.
