The Long Island Museum is a Smithsonian Affiliate dedicated to enhancing the lives of adults and children with an understanding of Long Island's rich history and diverse culture. The museum occupies nine scenic acres in the heart of Stony Brook and includes three exhibition buildings and five historic structures. The museum features permanent and changing exhibitions on American history and art, and the finest collection of horse-drawn carriages in the country, exploring the history of transportation before the invention of the automobile. The Museum is accredited by the American Alliance of Museums, and in 2006, became a Smithsonian Affiliate.
