Highland Brewing Company, Asheville’s first legal brewery since Prohibition, began in a downtown basement in 1994. Where else could a Jamaican man of Chinese descent start a brewery that honors Scots-Irish heritage? Oscar Wong founded Highland, which is now in its second generation of family ownership. Highland’s president is Leah Wong Ashburn, Oscar’s daughter.

In 2005 the company moved to an industrial building in various states of disrepair. As the brewery grows, the revitalization of the old building grows along with it. The industrial feel is consistent with retrofitted shipping containers, accented with pallet wood, and completely powered by the sun on clear days. A grassy, tree-lined meadow and spacious tasting room host friends and family members of all ages. The recently completed event center and rooftop bar (with views of the Appalachian peaks) are available for private events for up to 750 people.
