Newport House is Williamsburg's most historic place to stay. The house was designed in 1756 by famous architect Peter Harrison and is completely furnished to museum standards to about 1770. Guests magically returning from 1770 will not notice anything different from then except electricity, private bathrooms, air-conditioning and Wi-Fi. Each of our two bed-chambers (that's all we are permitted in this location) accommodates up to 3 people in 4-poster canopy beds -- the New England Chamber and the Philadelphia Chamber, so named because of the furnishings and colors in each.
We are located only about 5 minutes' walk from the Historic Area of Colonial Williamsburg and the College of William & Mary, about 10 minutes' drive from Jamestown, 20 minutes' drive from Yorktown, 30 minutes' drive from the Mariners Museum, and 45 minutes' drive from Shirley Plantation House . Breakfast in our formal dining room is usually run as an historical seminar, with food reflecting the 18th century, some of it grown in our own garden. Every Tuesday evening, people come to our ballroom for two hours of English Country Dancing, the kind of dancing usually done in the 18th century and colonial America -- beginners and spectators welcome. On Thursday evenings we usually offer two hours of Scottish Country Dancing.
John, your host, is a retired museum director and captain of an historic Tall Ship, and is the author of many historic books. Cathy, your hostess, is a retired Registered Nurse, and is a gardening expert, a bird-watcher, and bee-keeper. Both can help you to get the most out of your visit to Williamsburg.
