Holocaust Museum in Curitiba

As the Adolf Eichmann’s trial (arrested in Jerusalem, in 1961) began, the State attorney of the State of Israel, Israel Guideon declared: “I’m here today to speak on behalf of six million Jewish who can no longer speak for themselves”. The inauguration of the first Holocaust Museum in Brazil shares the same feeling, by spreading the word and telling stories of those who perished and those who survived the genocide.

Stories that can no longer be forgotten and should be passed on to the future generations. This is the goal of Holocaust Museum of Curitiba that was officially inaugurated in November 2011, and is visited weekly by 700 people, both adults and students from public and private schools, within a 400m2 space.

Holding an educational vocation and a well-defined pedagogic line, the museum shows the war events through stories of victims who are connected to Brazil or to the Paraná state. It is a tool against the Nazi dehumanization by humanizing the victims and highlighting “life”. Is also evidences the struggle against intolerance, hatred, discrimination, racism and bullying, so relevant nowadays and fundamental so the interest for visits was spread out.

The Holocaust Museum in Curitiba was not going to fulfill its mission if it didn’t promote a wide discussion about prejudice and violence in the 20th and 21st century. Simon Wiesenthal said that the survivors must be like seismographs in order to detect this threats. We can also accomplish that function, since we acknowledge our own story. This is one of the messages that the museum leaves to the public of Curitiba, Paraná and of Brazil: that humanity learns how to live together better and to respect the differences of color, faith, ethnicity or political positions.
