Epiacvm Roman Fort

Epiacum Roman Fort stands at the heart of a working farm. As "open access" land it is accessible for visitors and our small, but growing company, is working hard to promote and develop it.
15 miles from Hadrians Wall it has, until around 2010, been forgotten about and fallen off the Roman radar. Thanks to extensive research by English Heriatge it has now been called "the most significant archaeological monument in the local region" ( STewart AINSWORTH, English Heriatge / Time Team)
It is believed that it existed to control the local Roman lead mining in the North PENNINE hills.
Come and enjoy a walk around the. Site as you follow the "Nervian Trail" and walk in the footsteps of the Romnas
But also look out and enjoy the stunning landscape from an historic vantage point.
We have a small car park ( donations welcome via an honesty box) but at this point no visitor facilities as such (we are working on it!!)
Come and discover - there are leaflets available in the car park, information panels and a lovely greenwood bench to rest on after your hike up the hill!
There are no designated paths - you will need your walking shoes, your imagination and plenty of time to take in the stunning views!
Duration of circular walk- 1 hour 15 mins ( including time to read the information panels)
You can connect to the PENNINE WAY, south Tyne Trail and the South Tynedale Railway via Kirkhaugh Station
Or just park in the car park and stay a while!
We are 2 miles from Alston , the highest market town in the UK where there are plenty of shops and amenities - make a day of it and enjoy our local area!
