Hull Peoples Memorial

The Hull People's Memorial Exhibition Centre is an extremely popular visitor attraction telling the story of Kingston upon Hull's experiance of war. Very few people realise that Hull suffered more devastation during World War Two than anywhere else in the UK and suffered the highest number of deaths per 1,000 people too. In fact, of the whole of the British Commonwealth only Malta experienced more destruction than Kingston upon Hull. In both world wars, WWI and WWII, only London saw more bombs falling on the city than did Hull! Much of what happened in our Great City that kept it out of the newspaper and history books is still classified as secret even all of these years after the war. We do know that the destruction of Hull was so severe that the press were not allowed to issue any reports or pictures for fear of the affect they would have on the morale of the rest of the country; "If it is that bad in Hull, what haapens if the attack us too?"

In the People's Memorial you can handle a large selection of weapons, munitions and artifacts for the war years, the children can dress up in Army, Navy, Airforce uniforms or as an evacuee. We have a large selection of original uniforms and clothing suitable for children of all ages (dad).

During your visit why not ask us to help research your ancestor(s) military history? Our team have helped thousands of visitors and, best of all, while most researchers charge £50, £70 or even £90 per hour, our service is free: all we ask is for a donation towards our operating expences. We want everyone to be able to afford to use our service as trust our visitors to donate what they can afford.

Admission is free and most areas can be easily access by wheelchair users. Allow around one hour for your visit, two or more if you wish to use our research service.

Our medals service has helped many veterans and descendants recover unclaimed medals.
