14 National Plant Collections

Established by the distinguished plantsman Sir Harold Hillier in 1953, it is now home to 14 National Collections, over 400 Champion Trees and 42,000 plants from temperate regions. It is one of the most important modern plant collections in the world. Open all year, every part of the Gardens offers beauty, discovery and inspiration throughout the seasons. Outstanding attractions include: the iconic 250m long summer double border, Pond, Bog Garden and one of the largest Winter Gardens in Europe.

Let Children Explore - The Gardens are a wonderful place for children to play and explore. They will love to climb the fantastic tree house, jump across the wobbly bridge, weave through the bamboo tunnels, swing on the super snake swing and clamber around the Hilltop Adventures 'mini assault loop' or Search the woods for foraging pigs and look out for the fish and ducks in the Pond.
During the school holidays we provide a wide range of family activities. Check the website for full details of our events

Seasonal Highlights
Winter - The Winter Garden covers over four acres and is one of the largest in Europe. Filled with plants that show off their bold coloured bark and incredible scents.
Spring - A perfect time to experience and enjoy the stunning collection. With spring bulbs bursting into flower; Magnolias,
Japanese flowering cherries, Azaleas and Rhododendrons in full glory.
Summer - Walk down and marvel at one of the longest double borders in the country. At 250m long, the Centenary Border is a kaleidoscope of colour. Look out for the striking Red Hot Pokers, Echinacea and Crocosmia.
Autumn - See the range of Champion Trees clothed in bronze and gold, as the autumn sun ripens the fruits and berries of the season.
