Our volunteers have rescued and restored 30 old stationary steam engines - some of the engines which once powered the cotton mills and woollen mills of the North of England. Most of these can be seen running in steam on our occasional Steaming Days; usually Bank Holiday Sundays and Mondays (but not Easter.) The engines can also be viewed static (not in steam) on the volunteers' working days (Wednesdays and non-steam Sundays), but the museum is normally closed on other days.
We have a wide variety of different types of stationary steam engine, including 2 old beam engines (The oldest is approaching 180 years old!) Some of the engines are now unique - the only one of its type to survive anywhere in the world!
2019 Steaming Days are: ; May 5,6, May 26,27 August 25,26; October 26,27; December 28, 29; 10.00am to 4.00pm each day. We do not charge for admission, but donations to the Northern Mill Engine Society are appreciated.
