Southdown is a modern detached house set in a large garden in the hamlet of Roundway Village, a mile from the historic market town of Devizes. The B&B has 3 guest bedrooms and is rated 4 star Silver with Visit England along with Visit England and Visit Wiltshire Breakfast Awards. In 2015 it was awarded Visit England’s new ROSE award, given for outstanding hospitality.
A footpath running alongside the house leads to the Kennet & Avon Canal and the attractions and facilities of Devizes. A short walk in the other direction takes you up onto Roundway Down on the edge of the North Wessex Downs Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. Here you can find the Devizes Millennium White Horse (one of 8 horses cut into the Wiltshire Downs), the site of the Battle of Roundway (1643) and Oliver’s Castle hillfort.
Bedrooms have comfortable beds, cotton sheets, duvets, ample storage space, flat screen freeview TV, DVD player, individual bedside lights, full length mirror, hair dryer, easy chair, folding table and drinks facilities. Sheets & blankets are available on request. Bathrooms are equipped with good quality bath sheets & hand towels, soap, shampoo, conditioner and shower/bath gel, assorted amenity items, mirror & shaver/toothbrush points. There is softened water & excellent showers to ensure your comfort.
Breakfast is taken in the conservatory during warmer & lighter months and in the dining room when cooler. Both rooms overlook the back garden. Fresh fruit, yogurt, cereals, toast and pastries are always available, along with the traditional Wiltshire breakfast, grilled where possible. Food is of good quality, free range and/or organic and sourced locally where possible. We make our own preserves and honey is supplied by our daughter’s bees.
There is a guest lounge containing books, maps & magazines etc There is also a “gallery” with photos of the area, additional drinks facilities, silent fridge for guests’ use and more tourist information. Free wi-fi is available throughout the house.
Southdown is well situated for walking several long-distance paths, the Wessex Ridgeway and White Horse Trail being two of them. The White Horse Trail is a 90 mile walk taking in all 8 existing white horses cut into the Wiltshire hills. This is a quiet and peaceful part of Southern England, steeped in history and mysticism, much of it designated as an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. It incorporates sections of other long distance trails, such as The Ridgeway (said to be the oldest road in Europe), the Wansdyke, the Wessex Ridgeway and the relatively new Mid-Wilts Way, as well as parts of the Kennet & Avon Canal towpath including the famous flight of 29 locks at Caen Hill, Devizes. Roundway is virtually at the centre of the Trail with no point being more than 14 miles away by road, so Southdown is in a perfect location for those wishing to walk all or part of the Trail without the hassle of finding accommodation every night and carrying everything with you or arranging luggage transfers. Only one lot of unpacking and repacking to do too!
