Just off the Road to the Isles or across the short stretch of water from the Isle of Mull lies Lochaline and the Morvern peninsula. While an increasing number of visitors are finding-out what the area has to offer, they remain largely undiscovered and provide a relaxing getaway in some of Scotland’s most stunning surroundings.
Life on Morvern moves at a somewhat leisurely pace.
Ardtornish estate is big even by Scottish standards, 35,000 acres in all. It spreads out around Loch Aline, a huge, wooded, U-shaped bay, a natural haven. At the head of the loch stands the tower of Kinlochaline Castle, rising theatrically, sienna-coloured, above the trees.
Not far from the Castle, also at the head of the loch, is Ardtornish House, part late-Victorian pile, part château; it is surrounded by a famous garden, all 28 acres of it. The soil is shallow, Stoney, acid, and wet or boggy in many places. Rainfall averages 85 inches (2150mm) and gales occur frequently. Despite these apparent drawbacks, many fine plants thrive here, plants which can be difficult in drier regions. Over the years one gardener has replaced 19, but it is beautiful, and well worth spending a morning or afternoon exploring.
Wildlife is rarely camera shy, in fact, when it comes to wildlife, there are few places in Scotland that can compete. Seals, otters, red deer, dolphins and even whales can be spotted - assuming, of course, that the breath-taking scenery doesn’t prove too much of a distraction.
Most of the produce available to buy from our Gift shop is home-grown. Our Victorian kitchen garden is lovingly being restored back to its former glory. Delicious local produce on almost every menu.
There’s accommodation to suit every taste and budget. Rest your head in a 4 poster bed within our stunning country house, relax in one of our 6 quant stone built self-catering cottages or crash out the night in our basic but comfortable bunkhouse.
