CairnGorm Mountain is home to Scotland’s only funicular railway. This is a unique visitor experience that allows people of all abilities to reach the Top Station where the Ptarmigan Restaurant is located with panoramic views from over 3,500ft. There is also a viewing terrace, exhibition, shop and the highest post box in the British Isles. In order to protect the plateau out with our snowsports operation, funicular passengers are not permitted to exit the top station to go onto the mountain unless they are booked on a guided walk or a guided mountain bike descent.
Guided Walks
The Summit Walk takes you from the Ptarmigan Station at 3600ft up to the summit of Cairn Gorm where on a fine day you will experience the magnificent 360 degree views over the Strath, the Moray Coast, Lochnagar and the Cairngorm Mountain Range. Your guide will be able to give information on the views, the history and stories of the area, as well as the flora and fauna which lives and survives at this altitude. You might be lucky enough to see Ptarmigan, Dotterel, Snow Bunting, Reindeer or even Eagles on your 90 minute circular route. The Walk @ The Top operates daily between May and October with two walks at 10.30am and 1.30pm. Please note that customers wishing to take part in the Guided Walk @ The Top will be required to either purchase a Funicular Railway ticket or make their own way to the Top Station. Please arrive 15 minutes before the start of your walk.
Snowsports
CairnGorm Mountain is Scotland’s favorite snowsports destination! Located in the heart of the Cairngorm National Park the Ski Area is not only home to over 30km of pisted runs, but also boasts phenomenal panoramic views from over 3,500ft. With 35 different runs within the Ski Area there is something for every ability of skier and boarder. We have everything you could possibly need for a perfect day of snowsports all located onsite. Visit the equipment hire where our friendly staff will be waiting to kit you out with everything you need for a day of fun or pop into The Snow School before starting your day if you would like to get some lessons. This is an ideal solution for those who are either looking to hit the slopes for the first time or simply trying to take their snowsports to the next level!
Guided Ridge to River Bike Descent
This ride takes customers on an exciting descent of 3,000ft from the Ptarmigan Top Station down the Hill Track and then off-road down into Aviemore passing the scenic Loch Morlich on the way. This descent will take approximately 4 hours.
Guided Hill Track Bike Descent
Offers guests the opportunity to experience the thrill and excitement of this unique mountain bike descent, using the funicular for uplift, high quality bikes under the guidance of our highly qualified mountain bike guides. Guests will be able to ride the entire Hill Track twice after a practice run from the middle station. This 2 and half hour experience involves 2 descents of almost 1500ft from the Ptarmigan Top Station to the Base Station on top quality.
The Storehouse Restaurant
The Storehouse boasts home-made dishes, daily specials and freshly made cakes and pastries made in our in-house bakery. Dishes range from paninis and sandwiches to venison burgers and our famous smokey seafood platter. We now offer freshly ground Starbucks coffee and a wide range of wines, champagnes, beers and ales.
