The Museum is located in the oldest building in the Kogarah area - Carss Cottage. It is in Carss Bush Park on the point overlooking Kogarah Bay. The Cottage is built of sandstone, which was quarried on the property. It was built between 1863 and 1865 for Mr William Carss and family.
Kogarah Historical Society runs the museum which features historic items relating to Kogarah's past and present history and reminds visitors of how it was to live in the early days of the colony of NSW. The Society offers tours with a talk on the history of the area, the Cottage and the Carss family, a walk around Carss Park and of course a look around the Museum.
The NSW Heritage Council has placed a permanent conservation order on Carss Cottage and Carss Point and in 1987 the Cottage and the Park were recognised by the National Trust 'to be protected as a place of beauty'.
