Kitty Burns

Nestled below Melbourne’s iconic Skipping Girl, Kitty Burns, an all day eatery and cafe, combines both the tranquility of the Yarra Bend with the quirkiness that lies key to both Melbourne design and dining. Perched high on the banks of the Yarra River, Kitty Burns is a hidden sanctuary amongst the gum trees and wildlife, where you’ll feel a world away from the noise and traffic of the city.

The design has been executed by Biasol: Design Studio, with a distinct Scandinavian feel and sleek minimalist style. Blonde timber frames are paired with pretty pastel blue and green accents in this lofty cafe. Plenty of greenery and pot plants warm up the interior, which blends in seamlessly with its natural surrounds without overpowering it. Sun streams in through floor to ceiling glass giving the café a bright and airy feel. There’s plenty of seating outdoors to soak up some Vitamin D on a summer’s day or to keep your pooch company over breakfast.

Nutrition leads the way with dishes such as Kitty Greens served with house grains and toasted almonds (add a poached egg or chicken) plus a huge selection of raw, vegan cakes. Weekend blowouts are catered for with Bistrot Morgan donuts, incredibly flaky almond croissants and dishes such as the Smoked Brisket Croque Madame – Wagyu Brisket Pastrami and Smoked Mozzarella line the satisfying toastie topped with a fried egg. Other highlights include Melbourne cafe favourites spliced with Asian flavours, such as the umami-rich Togarashi spiced avocado and edamame smash.

Coffee is taken seriously with beans supplied by Allpress and a list that has all your usual suspects, plus the more involved cold drip/brew, batch brews, filters etc etc. Warm Elixirs are as important with Matcha, Chai and Red velvet beetroot lattes to hit the warm drink spot when the coffee limit has been hot for the day. Smoothies take up half of a separate drinks menu, with playful names such as Acai of the Tiger and Blue Steel. Fresh juices and elixirs have their own column too. Housemade milks – almond + coconut – complement the Allpress espresso nicely. Teas are by Storm in a Teacup.
