Waimangu Volcanic Valley is Rotorua's premier tourist attraction and a ‘must do’ eco-experience when you visit Rotorua. Self-guided tours through a continually evolving valley highlight unique ecology, rare botany and spectacular geothermal features. A protected scenic reserve and wildlife refuge, Waimangu Volcanic Valley geothermal park is set in pristine New Zealand bush and encompasses beautiful Lake Rotomahana which boasts its own separate geothermal system.

Easy Walking: There are many walks, mainly downhill, for you to choose from. Enjoy the serenity of our New Zealand native bush as you wander at your own pace through a natural environment. You will see newly forming silica terraces and rare and unusual thermal plants. And of course, geothermal activity is all around you, from tiny Birds Nest Spring to dramatic Echo Crater, and Frying Pan Lake, the world's largest hot water spring. Inferno Crater and its volatile and beautiful blue lake are guaranteed to take your breath away. Don't forget your camera!

Mt Haszard Hiking Trail: For the fitter walker, this trail opened in January 2005 and follows parts of the original Waimangu Round Trip walking route from the early 1900’s when tourists came to view the Waimangu Geyser erupting.

Boat Cruise: Enjoy an optional boat cruise on Lake Rotomahana either on its own or combined with your walk. This beautiful lake has its own separate geothermal system with very active thermal activity that can only be seen from our vessel. One of New Zealand’s most beautiful, unspoilt, natural wilderness areas, the lake and surrounding land are protected from development.
