Located on the border of the regions of Anjou, Touraine and Poitou, the Royal Abbey of Fontevraud is one of the largest monastic sites remaining from the Middle Ages. A UNESCO-classified historic monument and one of the Loire Valley’s major tourist destinations, Fontevraud continues to follow its founding principals: to be a model community, an ideal city!
THE HÔTEL
Located in Fontevraud Royal Abbey, Fontevraud L'Hôtel is the first cultural ‘resort’ in France. Inspired by the idea of a lively, living heritage, and as part of Fontevraud’s Contemporary City project, this establishment embodies a durable, cultural dynamism, as innovative in its conception of hospitality as in its cuisine.
Sleeping in the calm silence of the Abbey, having breakfast in the priory orchard or walking alone through Fontevraud as night falls, are all unforgettable experiences. We invite our guests to enliven the senses, stimulate and delight the emotions, to create an unforgettable experience.
THE RESTAURANT
On the ground floor of the priory, Fontevraud Le Restaurant has been conceived as “a journey between tradition and modernity”. Its particularity is its simple and austere character, which is linked to its religious and then penitentiary past. The key was to seize the essence of this past so that diners in the restaurant “would not forget where they were”.
Installed around the cloister, Fontevraud Le Restaurant opens onto the garden. The space brings light and poetry to the majestic walls of the monastic architecture.
THIBAUT RUGGERI, BOCUSE D'OR
Thibaut Ruggeri's challenge at Fontevraud was to develop a contemporary cuisine, making the most of local seasonal produce, whilst working in perfect harmony with this exceptional site and the nine centuries of history that feed into him. His motto in the kitchen is to bring together the good and the beautiful. His inspiration is always based on a feeling: nature’s work, a texture, a mix of colours...
THE IBAR
Located in Saint-Lazare priory’s former chapel, the iBar is a resolutely innovative concept. Part of the new hotel complex, the chapel is a meeting point that is accessible to all of Fontevraud’s visitors. Ultimately, the idea developed to install a digital mediatheque and bar here. Whilst it is no longer a chapel, the space is not a typical bar either, but having a drink in this historical space, a place for meeting and sharing, is the occasion to linger over a visit to Fontevraud and learn about its history thanks to the touch-screen tabletops set into the furniture.
Fontevraud L’Hôtel sees itself as an ‘ideal city’ that welcomes and adapts itself to all its guests (families, couples, friends, etc.), who can experience its history and create their own.
