An interesting and informative bird museum in one of the world’s biggest birding paradise.

The bird museum is situated at the farm Ytri-Neslönd by Lake Myvatn. It was established because of the pioneering work of Mr. Sigurgeir Stefansson from that farm. Sigurgeir’s bird museum is considered the largest private bird collection that is known in Iceland.
The museum houses about 180 species of birds and more than 300 specimens of bird. Almost all the Icelandic bird fauna is represented in addition to numerous eggs.

The building is designed by one of Iceland foremost contemporary architect and it perfectly fits into the fabulous surroundings. This family-managed museum was build in memory of Mr. Sigurgeir Stefansson and was designed after his idea, how he wanted people to enjoy his collection.

An adventure world for bird enthusiasts. Nowhere in the world are so many species of duck to be found in the one and same place. The barrow’s goldeneye duck (Bucephala islandica) has it's only breeding habitat in Europe in Northeast Iceland, mostly by Lake Myvatn.

You can get information about birds and where they are to be found. The museum has bird watching binoculars for observing the birds on the Lake.
