Tybee Beach Ecology Trips are conducted on Tybee Island, Georgia (Savannah Beach) by marine biologist Dr. Joe Richardson. Dr. Joe is a retired university marine science professor who has conducted research and taught along the southeastern US and Bahamas for more than 30 years. Tybee Beach Ecology Trips are fun, relaxed, hands-on, educational experiences for all ages. Typical two-hour beach trips include: high and low tide beachcombing, exploring tide pools and sandy intertidal habitats, pulling a 50 foot beach net, and learning information about the animals you find. Dr. Joe brings plenty of shovels, dip nets, bags and buckets. Just dress for the beach, and plan for your feet/shoes (at least) to get wet and sandy. As you find live animals, add them to our "beach touch tank" to be able to study and observe them closely. All live animals are returned back to their habitats when finished, but you can keep all the empty shells and other non-living things (fossil shark teeth, sponges, soft corals, etc.) that you want. Tybee Beach Ecology Trips are scheduled around low tide because that is when we can see and find the most things. Because the time of low tide changes from day to day, the time of Dr. Joe's trips also change from day to day. So be sure to contact Dr. Joe when you know the dates of your visit to Savannah and Tybee Island, and he can check the tides and schedule and let you know when he will be scheduling trips for those dates. Tybee Beach Ecology Trips are conducted at the north end of Tybee Island, near the Tybee Island Lighthouse. Dr. Joe conducts his trips for families and small groups, scout groups, schools, adult tours, and other groups. Dr. Joe often says "you never know what you will see on Tybee's beach!" So learn how to find things that often go overlooked and make your trip to the beach much more than just a beach trip.
